USDA became aware of the problem during an
ongoing investigation of a multistate outbreak of Salmonella
serotype Montevideo illnesses.
The USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service is
continuing to investigate the outbreak with the company, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug
Administration, and affected state public health partners.
The CDC has posted information about the
multistate outbreak on its Web site at
http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/ montevideo/index.html and
will update the public on progress of the investigation as
information becomes available.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal
infections, particularly in young children, frail or elderly
people, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include
fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and
abdominal pain. Individuals who believe they are experiencing
symptoms are advised to contact their health care provider.
