Parkers Farm Expands Recall to Include Dips and Spreads Distributed at Safeway and Whole Foods Stores in Colorado

DENVER-The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Wednesday announced that Parkers Farm of Coon Rapids, Minn., has expanded its Jan. 8 recall to include certain dips and spreads distributed in Colorado. The products were recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes and sold at Safeway and Whole Foods stores. Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems.

The following products were recalled and sold under the Parkers Farm or Parkers label:

• 12- and 14-ounce dips and spreads, including jalapeņo nacho, pimiento and salsa con queso, sell-by dates on or before 9/30/2010

• 8-, 12- and 16-ounce sharp cheddar, bacon, onion, smoked cheddar, Swiss almond, horseradish, garlic, port wine, Swiss and cheddar cold-pack cheese in round or square plastic tubs with snap-on lids, sell-by dates on or before 12/31/2010

Although no illnesses have been reported to date, consumers are advised to discard the recalled products or return them to the place of purchase for a replacement or refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-869-6685.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
