Slim-Fast® Ready-to-Drink Products in Cans Recalled Due to Possible Contamination

DENVER– The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment today announced that Unilever United States, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is conducting a nationwide voluntary recall of all Slim-Fast® ready-to-drink products in cans. This is due to the possibility of contamination with Bacillus cereus, a micro-organism which may cause diarrhea and possibly nausea and/or vomiting. Although the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote, the company announced the recall as a precaution.

The recalled products were sold in stores nationwide and are packaged in paperboard cartons that contain four, six or 12, 11-oz. steel cans. The product also is sold in individual cans at some retail outlets.

The recall involves all Slim-Fast® products in cans, regardless of flavor, best-by date, lot code or UPC number. Other Slim-Fast® products, including powdered shakes, meal bars or snack bars are not affected by this recall.

Consumers who have purchased any of the Slim-Fast® ready-to-drink products in cans are urged to discard them and contact the company for a refund at 1-800-896-9479, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET. A recorded message is available 24/7.

The recall was initiated after the company conducted quality testing on the canned products. The company is investigating the issue and will resume production and shipment of the product when it has been resolved.
