Holly Hedegaard Appointed to the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Health StatisticsDENVER - The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced that Holly Hedegaard, M.D., has been appointed to the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Health Statistics. Hedegaard is the only person from a state health department to serve on this board. The National Center for Health Statistics is America’s principal health statistics agency and collects data from birth and death records, medical records and interview surveys to compile statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve public health. The Board of Scientific Counselors provides advice and makes recommendations to the Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Center for Health Statistics on statistical and epidemiological research and activities. Ned Calonge, chief medical officer at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said, “This is an outstanding achievement, and Dr. Hedegaard’s appointment to this position highlights her remarkable skills in epidemiology, statistical analysis and use of data for health care policy development. The department and the state of Colorado are well represented with her serving on this board.” Board members are selected by the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services from authorities knowledgeable in statistical, demographic and epidemiological research. Hedegaard is the data program manager in the Emergency Medical and Trauma Services Section at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and has served as an injury/medical epidemiologist at the state health department since 1994.
