California Company Expands Ground Beef Recall
for Possible E.coli O157:H7 Contamination

DENVER-United Food Group, LLC, a Vernon, Calif., establishment, voluntarily expanded its June 3 recall of some of its ground beef products from 75,000 pounds to 370,000 pounds due to possible contamination with E.coli O157:H7.

The recalled products were distributed to Albertsons stores in Colorado under the brand names Moran's, Inter-American, Stater Bros., Basha's and 1st Street. The products include "sell by" dates of Apr/29/07, Apr/30/07 or May/06/07; a "freeze by" date of Apr/28/07, Apr/29/07, Apr/30/07 or May/07/07; or a "produced on" date of "Apr/13/07" or "Apr/20/07."

State health officials advised individuals who may have this product in their freezers to discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

For a complete listing of products included in both the original and expanded recalls, visit www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/Recall_025_2007_Expanded/index.asp.

E.coli O157:H7 is a very serious bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

To date, two cases of E.coli O157:H7 have been reported in Colorado, one of which is linked to the recalled product. Both adults became ill in early May and have fully recovered.

The possible contamination of the product was discovered through sampling done by the California Department of Health Services and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's Laboratory, in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the course of an investigation into reported illnesses. The ground beef products were produced on April 20, 2007 and were shipped to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon and Utah.

For more information, the public may call Dan Rifkin with the Consumer Protection Division at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at 303-692-3620.
