Public Comment Period Opens for Colorado Springs Landfill to Accept Asbestos

DENVER - The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has been asked by Waste Management, Inc. to review a proposed change to the approved design and operation plan at the Colorado Springs Landfill Expansion, a municipal solid waste landfill located on State Hwy. 94 east of Colorado Springs. The proposed changes would enable the facility to accept friable, or easily crumbled, asbestos waste.

The proposed changes, which are spelled out in a stand-alone addendum to the existing plan, cover the design of the disposal area and modifications to waste-acceptance procedures, work practices and disposal procedures. The Department of Public Health and Environment's Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division is reviewing the application to assure the facility will not negatively affect human health or the environment. The department will approve or deny the proposed changes.
