Services Provided by WIC

WIC provides three basic kinds of services for people who are certified on the WIC Program:

Supplemental Foods. WIC participants are given monthly checks for foods that contain selected nutrients. These foods are intended to supplement a person’s diet to make it more nutritious. Typical foods are milk, cereal, eggs, cheese, juice, beans, peanut butter, and infant formula.

Nutrition Education. At each WIC visit (at a minimum every three months), participants or their guardian receive nutrition education to help them eat a nutritious diet and to improve their health.
Screening and Referral. WIC participants are screened to help determine their health status. Heights and weights are done on participants as well as a small amount of blood is taken to determine iron levels. Other screening is done and as necessary WIC participants are informed of other community resources which may be of value to them.
