Health Care Program For Children with Special Needs
Newborn Metabolic Screening

Even though a newborn baby may appear healthy, a disorder can be present at birth that cannot be seen or has no symptoms.  Fortunately, all babies born in hospitals in Colorado are screened, by means of a blood test, to detect certain diseases or conditions that might cause serious problems.  A “screen” is not a diagnostic test.  If screening results suggest the possibility of a problem, further testing will be recommended. For more information about metabolic screening or metabolic disorders, contact the HCP office nearest to you or read more through the resource links provided on this page.
