Who should seek genetic services?

...any individual or family concerned about a genetic condition, its cause, recurrence risks, treatment availability, and/or diagnostic testing (prenatal or postnatal).  Typically, genetic services are subdivided into preconception/prenatal, pediatric and adult.

Common reasons to seek prenatal/preconception genetic services include:

  • The mother will be 35 years or older at delivery

  • Abnormal prenatal test results – e.g. abnormal ultrasound findings, positive maternal serum screening (blood test)

  • Couples with a family history of a genetic condition or birth defect

  • Couples who have had a child with a genetic condition or birth defect

  • Risks related to the mother’s illness or infection (e.g. diabetes, rubella)

  • Risks related to a suspected or known exposure to certain medicines, chemicals or other potentially harmful agents

  • Presence of a known or suspected genetic disorder

  • Presence of a birth defect or multiple birth defects

  • Known or suspected chromosome abnormality

  • Mental retardation or developmental delay

  • Family history of any of the above indications
