Health Care Program For Children with Special Needs
Prenatal Plus Program

The goal of the Prenatal Plus program is to improve birth outcomes by reducing the prevalence of low birth weight infants among Medicaid-eligible women in Colorado. A low birth weight infant weighs less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces or 2500 grams.

Prenatal Plus is a Medicaid-funded program which provides case management, nutrition, and psychosocial services to Medicaid-eligible pregnant women in Colorado who are assessed to be at high risk for delivering low birth weight infants. These services complement medical prenatal care by addressing the lifestyle, behavioral, and non-medical aspects of a woman's life likely to affect her pregnancy. The Prenatal Plus program has been effective at increasing the number of women who stop smoking, gain an adequate amount of weight, and resolve psychosocial problems, and has decreased the number of infants who are born at low birth weight.
