Laboratory Services DivisionEvidential Breath Alcohol Testing ProgramAbout the Evidential Breath Alcohol Testing Program, the Intoxilyzer 5000 EN and ignition interlock devices Evidential Breath Alcohol Testing Program staff performs certification services as directed by state statutes for the enforcement of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Drug (DUI/D) laws and related offences. Department Rules and Regulations, Testing for Alcohol and Other Drugs, describe the criteria for certification. (See Rules and Regulations, below, for a link.) The Intoxilyzer 5000 EN is the evidential breath alcohol-testing device used in Colorado. The instruments are certified, maintained and repaired by the Evidential Breath Alcohol Testing Laboratory. Additionally, staff conducts on-site evaluation of all law enforcement agencies that use these testing devices. Training and certification are provided to the operators of breath testing instruments. Laboratories that perform tests on subjects arrested under these laws are inspected routinely, and issued certifications when they prove compliance with department standards. Ignition interlock devices are also approved by this laboratory based on Rules and Regulations: Ignition Interlock Devices. (See Rules and Regulations, below, for a link.) These devices may be court ordered to prevent vehicle operation when a driver has alcohol in his/her system.
