CHEMSWEEP
Colorado waste agricultural pesticide collection program
Pesticides have helped our farmers produce food for the world. Over
the years, some of these pesticides have been banned or suspended because of the risks
they pose to human health and the environment. Until recently, Colorado agri-business
(farmers, ranchers, commercial applicators, nurseries, growers) had no economical means to
dispose of the unusable pesticides. As a result, many of these pesticides were stored
on-site, often in deteriorating containers and under less-than-ideal storage conditions.
Many of these storage practices present the potential for contamination of the
environment.
In response to growing concern about unusable pesticides, Colorado
State University sponsored limited waste pesticide collection programs
in the 1990's to dispose of banned and unusable pesticides in an economical and environmentally
safe manner. Due to continued demand for these services,
commercially-available collection programs are anticipated to be conducted at least
yearly.
