Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled

An intermediate care facility for the developmentally disabled is a residential program that has as its primary purpose the provision of health and/or rehabilitation services to individuals with mental retardation or related conditions receiving care and services under the Medicaid program.

Each individual residing in an ICF/DD must require and receive active treatment. Active treatment means the aggressive, consistent implementation of a program of specialized and generic training, treatments, health and related services directed toward the acquisition of the behaviors necessary for the individual to function with as much self-determination and independence as possible. It includes the prevention of deceleration of regression or loss of current optimal functional status.

The division conducts annual certification surveys for compliance with federal regulations and investigates any complaints filed against one of these providers.
