Acute Treatment Units

Acute treatment units provide short-term psychiatric care to persons who do not require inpatient hospitalization but need intense and individual services, such as crisis management and stabilization. These facilities provide twenty-four hour care in a therapeutically planned and professional staffed environment.

Joint agency oversight. Acute treatment units are dually regulated by the Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Health Facilities and Emergency Medical Services Division. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment issues the license on the basis of program approval from the Department of Human Services as well as compliance with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment requirements.

  • Department of Human Services oversight. This Department provides oversight regarding the following clinical and treatment components of their program: admission and discharge, staffing, treatment, medical records and client rights. In addition, the facility must be designated as a facility that can initiate an involuntary hold on an individual with a mental illness (also termed "27-10 designation"). For more information about the  Department of Human Services regulatory oversight, please contact the Division of Mental Health at (303) 866-7400.
  • Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment oversight. This Department is responsible for ensuring facility compliance with the following non-clinical and physical plant requirements: emergency preparedness, infection control, dietary services, linen and laundry services, interior and exterior environment and fire safety.
