Yersiniosis
Yersiniosis is an intestinal disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia
enterocolitica. The hallmark symptoms of this infection are fever and abdominal
pain. This is often accompanied by diarrhea and/or vomiting. As
Yersiniosis is often mistaken as appendicitis, severe complications may include
unnecessary appendectomies. In addition, a small proportion of cases may develop
reactive arthritis. Onset of symptoms typically occurs four to six days after
exposure and illness can persist for several days.
