Listeriosis

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious disease in newborns and adults.  Persons at highest risk include pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and immuno-compromised persons.  Symptoms initially include fever, chills, backache and sometimes nausea and vomiting but persons may develop serious complications of meningitis or spontaneous abortion. The incubation period is estimated to be three weeks.
