Autism Spectrum Disorders Projects

The Children’s Health Act of 2000 directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to establish regional centers in the United States to study factors contributing to a child developing ASD and to monitor the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

CO-CADDRE is a partnership between the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and JFK Partners at the University of Colorado Denver, and includes expertise in the areas of epidemiology, psychology, and developmental pediatrics.

CO-CADDRE project accomplishments include:

  • Developed a study, in collaboration with the other centers, to study the factors contributing to a child developing ASD:  Study to Explore Early Development (SEED).
  • Conducted Center studies on gastrointestinal disorders, co-existing mental health disorders, and intestinal permeability among children with ASD; and a study on screening general education classrooms for children with high functioning ASD.
  • Provided training to pediatricians through one-hour seminars to improve awareness of the symptoms of ASD and improve referral practices.
