Approved Residential Burning Devices

Certain burning devices are exempt from the state regulation that bans residential burning in the six-county Denver-metro area on air quality Action Days.  These exempt burning devices have been approved and certified by the State of Colorado and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and are designed to emit low levels of pollution.  Exempt devices include those that carry either the EPA Phase II or Colorado Phase III certification.  These certified devices include certain brands of wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves and inserts, and masonry heaters.  The following links will provide you with information on certified devices that are exempt from the residential burning regulation:

EPA Certified Residential Burning Devices

If residential burning is your only source of heat, then even a non-certified device may be exempt from the regulation.  For more information call Hugh Davidson at the Air Pollution Control Division at (303) 692-3157.

Burning artificial, manufactured or compressed wood logs in non-certified devices is also a violation. The regulation prohibits the use of uncertified devices, not fuels, on air quality Action Days.

It is illegal to install uncertified burning devices in the seven-county Denver-metro area.  It is also illegal to sell new or used uncertified burning devices in this region.
