Roadside Emissions Testing
High Polluting Vehicle
Finding and repairing high-polluting vehicles in the Denver-metropolitan area using roadside testing equipment is a legislatively mandated component of the Colorado Automobile Inspection and Readjustment (AIR) program.
Beginning in January 2008, if a vehicle is identified as high polluting by roadside testing equipment the owner is required by law to present the vehicle for an emissions compliance inspection. If the
the roadside data is confirmed, the vehicle must be repaired and pass a follow-up inspection. The inspection is free to the owner.
Here is how the program works (follow the links for additional information):
1. Vehicle is identified as high-polluting by
roadside emissions
monitors.
2.
Notification letter is sent to registered owner of the vehicle.
- Penalties assessed if letter is ignored.
- Call state to schedule a compliance inspection. The number
is listed in the notification letter you received.
3. Vehicle completes an
I/M 240 emissions compliance inspection.
4. Vehicle is repaired to meet state standards.
5. Vehicle undergoes a follow-up emissions compliance inspection and receives passing inspection report.
