Open Burning

Colorado Air Quality Control Regulation Number 9 applies to all open burning activities throughout the state. The following "frequently asked questions" outlines what is prohibited by regulation, what types of materials are allowed to be open burned, the permitting process, alternatives to open burning, and factors to consider when open burning must occur.

Air Curtain Destructor
  • Air Curtain Destructor/ Permit to Operate . This downloadable application is required to open burn with the use of an Air Curtain Device. It shall be erected and operated in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation. The device shall be permitted pursuant to Section IV.B.4 of Regulation No.9 and used in conjunction with an Open Burning Permit.
  • Relocation Notice for Air Curtain Destructors . This notice must be received by the Division at least ten (10) days prior to relocating an Air Curtain Device. Notify the Air Pollution Control Division if Air Curtain Device is Relocated to another section or more than four miles within a county or relocated to a different county than permitted.
