Household Contaminated Rags
Rags contaminated with solvents or some wood preservatives and
stains should be handled very carefully because they may spontaneously start on fire
if the rags are not stored properly. Not all solvents and
wood preservatives pose this danger, but it is better to be
over-cautious.
Disposal
Procedures include:
-
Conduct all activities outdoors.
-
Wear protective clothing such as chemical
resistant gloves, eye protection and long sleeves.
-
Hang rags contaminated with solvent or wood
preservatives and stain outside or spread them out to dry on a
nonflammable surface outside away from your house and other
outbuildings. The area must be away from potential
ignition sources, children and pets.
-
When completely dry, the rags can be put in a
trash bag and placed in the trash. Store the trash bag
outside until trash pickup day.
These procedures are intended for rags
contaminated by household use of solvents or wood preservatives
and stains only.
